What is the best combination of anti-virus, firewall, etc..?
I have avast right now but I heard that having a combination of programs allows better protection. I would prefer having free programs as well.

My opinion:
Free anti-virus:
Avira is good
Avast is good
AVG should be avoided
But… Free anti-virus programs are not that great… In fact… most suck. But if you are not an idiot, they are sufficient for most.
I would suggest investing in either ESET NOD32, or Kaspersky antivirus. (they also both have pretty good internet security suites)
For firewall, I would go with Zone Alarm all the way. Pro is better of course, but the free version is also good. I think it is the best firewall out there.
A layered protection system is the best, according to Sunbelt Software, they make Counter spy. You need a good Firewall, and at least 1 off each anti-spy & anti-virus.
I personally use ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, as well as Spyware Doctor. I also use McAfee Site advisor and Superantispyware.
Don’t get much trouble.
A lt of people tell you you can’t have 2 anti-virus programs running together, I have never had any problems with it, as long as the 2 programs don’t conflict.
Be aware, the more security you have, the slower the machine runs.
