I’m not sure what’s available these days for free.

You can find all kinds of software and get other people’s opinions on what works best. It’s shareware and trials.

There are several very good ones. I use and recommend AVG or Avast. I have AVG on 8 and Avast on 4 computers. I use and like SyGate PFW 5.6 Firewall but there are several very good security programs to choose from.

Many ISPs like Charter, Comcast, and many others offer what they call “(Their company) Security Suite”. Like Charter, my ISP, offers Charter Highspeed Security Suite. It’s really a great application made by F-Secure (a very expensive application if you buy it independently). If you have Charter, you can login to your account and download it at http://update.charter.com

Check with your ISP though to see if they offer it if you don’t have charter.

Anyway, F-Secure has a built in firewall, virus scanner, spyware scanner, parental controls, content manager, and more. However, the version for Vista currently sucks and lags very bad, so I use AVG (not the free version) right now. However, Charter claims they will have a non-beta version of the software ready soon, so if you have Vista, you’ll have to wait for F-Secure…

For antivirus, the top 3 choices by users are Kaspersky, AVG and Avast. I would personally recommend AVG because it is easy to handle, as it would no time for beginners to laern it. Kaspersky on the other hand is a bit more complicated. Avast is not really free, and its ‘free’ edition has quite limited capabilities. If you had the money, buy Avast.

For Firewall, I would recommend Zone Alarm because it’s very convenient to use. It’s free edition suits users ranging from beginners to experts. It works best paired with AVG antivirus. However, it is not compatible with most Bit torrent softwares. Though somehow, my BitComet works fine. Some would recommend Kerio firewall as it would be compatible with most bittorent programmes. i personally picked Zone Alarm since I’m more comfortable with its relatively easy-to-use firewall.

Google search shareware, you will see listing after liswting. I have heard of AGV, however placee a quick call to your internet provider, they will give you the best available options in your area. That’s what I did. Good-luck
